Anonymous Asked: I love contemporary, & I want to be good at it, but I have problems opening up & showing my feelings to people, so while I can relate to a song & feel it while listening to it by myself, in class I can't connect in the same way, it's too scary. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Opening up and being that vulnerable is one of the most difficult things to do not just in dance, but in life in general. I wish there was some magic potion that would allow you to do this, or that I could say some magic words that would solve this problem. But getting past this mental barrier is such a personal process. I definitely applaud the fact that you noticed this problem because that’s definitely a step in the right direction. But this isn’t something that you’re going to be able to solve over night. Things you can do to help is to make friends with the people in your class so you’ll be less afraid to show them your emotions. Another gradual adjustment thing you can do is kind of sneaky, but see if you can get into the studio alone and work by yourself. If you can get the studio to be a place that you are used to opening up in, you should gradually be able to do it when other people are around. But just remember that no one is going to judge you for feeling and getting emotionally involved in your dancing. And at some point, you’re going to have to break through this mental block or else you’ll stop growing as a dancer. So just start allowing yourself to be confident and ignore everyone else in the room. Focus on yourself in class and you should start to be able to open up more.

I hope this was helpful, and I hope you get past this mental block. If you have any further questions, don’t be shy to ask. Keep calm and dance on. =))
